Departure at Dawn

In the quietness of the lonesome night
He laid his head upon my chest,
And I had prayed with all my might;
That he would be the one to love me best.

I love him, oh I love him dearly
And it hurts my heart to know;
That he is not mine, I see it clearly
Tis here love was enough to grow!

In the silence not a word was uttered
I just looked him in the eyes
And I could feel his heart as it fluttered
And beat in tune with mine!

Then finally the hush did break
And he spoke three words to me;
I love you; my darling, and with a shake
He flew up on his two feet!

“To my wife I must return
But loving you is so real;
I long for you, my heart does yearn
Words can’t express how I feel!”

With a glimmer in his eyes
He got up in his carriage
And he somehow took me by surprise
When he asked my hand in marriage

“Yes oh yes!” without much thought
I hastily replied;
In the minute I thought of it naught
What was to become of his precious wife?

“Farewell my darling!” and with a whip
The horses sped away
Sunrise was fast approaching; quick
And soon it would be day!

I gathered my clothes together thus
And moved to get my keys
But something held me, I don’t know what
All I felt was the gentle breeze!

Alas and did the sun come up
And my lover’s love was gone;
Out of the sky I felt a tingling drop
I’d lost my lover at the break of dawn!
